Should there be limits on who gets to wear a swimsuit? Most people would say, “Of course not!” — unless you ask my daughter-in-law, Janice.
Not long ago, my husband Donald and I took a lovely trip to Miami Beach. It was warm, peaceful, and full of laughter. I felt alive and loved. One afternoon, I put on a simple black bikini, and Donald couldn’t stop complimenting me. A little girl nearby even snapped a sweet candid photo of us smiling together, which I later shared on Facebook.
But then Janice left a comment that cut deep: “Really? Why would she show off that wrinkly body in a swimsuit? It looks AWFUL!”
Her words shattered me. I cried. But instead of hiding, I decided to respond—with grace and a bit of strategy.
A week later, I invited the whole family to a backyard barbecue. When Janice arrived, I brought up the beach photo and shared what it meant to me: a symbol of love that grows deeper with age. Then, gently but clearly, I read her comment aloud in front of everyone and reminded the family how important kindness is—especially toward those we claim to love.
I told them, “We all age. Wrinkles and gray hair don’t erase beauty—they show a life well lived.”
Janice went quiet. Then, to my surprise, she apologized. She admitted she was wrong and said she didn’t realize how hurtful her words were.
It’s not always easy to stand up to ageism, especially when it comes from your own family. But sometimes, a little honesty and heart can open people’s eyes.
